Every business has a logo. It is the first impression your company makes on a new client, and the first thing that pops into their mind when recalling your business. Logos are the face of your brand; they appear on everything from storefronts and business cards to apparel, websites, and more. Research shows most consumers will remember your logo before they can recall your business’s name. Having a memorable and well-crafted logo is essential for standing out in today’s crowded market.
What makes a good logo?
Let’s think of some widely recognized brands with a powerful logo: Target, Walmart, and McDonald’s.

All three of these companies’ logos have two things in common: an icon and a word mark. An icon is the symbol of a brand: Target’s bullseye, Walmart’s star, and McDonald’s golden arches. Then there’s the word mark, which is typically the brand name. A well-designed logo should have both of these elements that come together to make the full logo. At the same time, these elements should also be able to work separately while keeping brand recognition. Think about the outside of a Target, you won’t see “Target” written big on the wall. They just use the bullseye icon, and you still know it is Target.
Of course, these rules can be bent. Another iconic example is Disney. Technically, they have a word mark and two icons: “Walt Disney” word mark text, the gradient striped castle that sits behind it, and they’ve also designed the “D” in Disney to be recognizable and utilized on its own as an icon.
Good logos are easily transferable. What that means is your logo should be created to be recognizable on something as big as an interstate billboard, then as small as an embroidered patch on a shirt, without anything getting lost or taking up too much visual attention. You don’t want too many colors or unnecessary imagery to distract from your brand when printed big, or get lost when printed small.
Brand recognition
In today’s crowded market, a strong logo is the easiest way to make your business easily recognizable. Think back to the last time you searched for a business on social media. All you see in the search bar are multiple businesses across the globe with the same name, and the only differentiation is the image inside the tiny profile picture beside it. You need to fill that space with a strong visual message of your brand: your logo or icon. Research shows that people are more likely to recognize imagery and visuals over words and phrases, so having a strong logo that reflects your brand is the best way to keep your business ahead of your competitors.
How it elevates your business
When a consumer sees a business with a strong logo, they are more likely to trust your business. A well-designed logo communicates the essence of your brand in a quick glance. Consistency is key when using your logo. Whether you’re a new business or looking to redesign your visual branding, your logo should be seen across all platforms, both online and offline. Doing so will cement your identity in the minds of your audience. When an audience sees a company with a strong visual identity, it shows them that they are serious about how their business is perceived and builds trust in their products or services.
Don’t let your business get lost in the crowd. There are thousands of tools, resources, companies, and freelance individuals whose job is to create logos and visual branding for businesses. Stay away from AI-generated logos; logos are used to connect human emotion to a business, and that can’t be produced effectively or accurately by artificial intelligence. A logo is the first step in the visual brand of your business. Once that is set, you are able to expand that visualization across social media, your website, other advertisements, and more.
